LATER NEWS. ARRIVAL OF THE U.S. SLOOP-OF-WAR SWATARA. [Press Telegbaph Agency.] The Blot, Friday. The U.S. Sloop-of-War Swatara, arrived at fi o'clock this morning, from Hobart Town. She brings the following telegrams (Renter's) of English news, received in Tasmania prior to the 10th inst. ; and also later Australian news. The Swatara sails to-morrow, direct for the Chatham Islands : London, October 8. It is stated that Count Arnim is kept in tlose confinement, and that his release has been refused. The missing documents which caused his arrest belonged to the archives of the Paris Embassy. The Count denies all knowledge of the greater part of the missing documents, but claims the remainder of them as his private property. The matter has caused considerable excitement in official Berlin, October 8. The alleged wounding of Don Carlos has been officially contradicted. Serious disturbances are reported to have occurred in the rank 3of the Carlists. Donnegarry has been dismissed, and Mendevis (Mendoza ?) has been appointed his successor. Melbourne, October 9. Sir James McCulloch's amendment, to negative the second reading of the Tariff Bill, was negatived by a large majority. The debate was animated. .'. The Torres Strait mail reached Townsville five days in advance of contract time. Launceston, October 9. The premises of several of the bankrupt firms have been closed to-day, and there is a complete stagnation in business.
