It is rumoured that the owner of the GoAhead is going to bring an action for libel against the proprietor of the Auckland Herald, for publishing a statement that the steamer Go-Ahead took materials for a still into the Mokau river. The matter has been placed in a lawyer’s hands. The Provincial Government is calling for tenders for planting potatoes on the mountain road for next year’s food supply for men working there.
A case heard in the District Court, Joseph Ellis, of Auckland, v. John Gwynneth, jun. ( for Brogden and Son, for detaining blocks sold with the steamer Paterson, at Waitara, was decided yesterday. The Judge gave judgment in favor of Ellis for £4O for the blocks, £lO damages, and £ll costs. The weather is still unsettled. Grahamstown, Saturday. The principal gold returns this week have been Moauatairi oOOozs,, and Alburnia 2-loozs. The Queen of Beauty is cleaning-up, and will have over SOOozs. banked to-night for the fortnightly yield. Small parcels make up the Y week’s lodgments to SOOOozs. An inquiry into the fire discovered on the premises of Murphy Brothers at 11 o’clock on Thursday night was opened to-day, and adjourned until Monday. Taup.anga, Saturday. The Times has an article on the absolute necessity of surveying and opening up the back country in the vicinity. It is likely that a deputation will wait on Sir Donald McLean with regard to the matter upon his arrival.
