[Press Telegraph Agency.] Auckland, Saturday. Mr. Beveridge, Provincial Solicitor, died after a protracted illness. Yatterina is scratched for the Canterbury Handicap, owing to the excessive weights. Te Whaka, the chief who murdered Nuku at Hokianga in 1868, sentenced to death, and afterwards committed to prison for life, but escaped from gaol three months afterwards and who has been living concealed with friends,, came into town with the Hokianga Resident Magistrate to-day, and received a free pardon. . Ghahamstown, Saturday. The gold lodgments in the Bank of New Zealand for the week are 1463 ounces. The Bright Smile contributes SSI ounces of that amount. The Superintendent, Mr. Sheehan, and Mr. Holloway visit the Upper Thames next week. The former is receiving numerous deputations.. Tabranga, Saturday. Town sections here are changing owners at high prices. The Government offices arc nearly completed, and the immigration cottages are in course of erection. Bluff, Saturday.. The barque Chance has sailed on a whaling voyage.
