She was caught in a S.E. gale, lasting seventy-three hours. The sea broke aboard, and split the mainsail to pieces. She drove 100 miles up the coast, on the starboard tack. NELSON. September 10.—Arrived; H.M.S. Blanche. The ship Halcione arrived yesterday from Napier having been six days on the passage, during which she experienced some very rough weather. The Summer Trade between America and Europe.—Six European steamers sailed from this port yesterday, viz.: Rhein, for Southampton and Bremen; City of Montreal, for Liverpool ; California, for Glasgow; Britannic, for Queenstown and Liverpool : and Washington, for Havre. They had not only a large list of first cabin passengers, but the steerage of every ship was full. This m%y A f e accounted for by the very l° w fares now charged by the several companies. There never was, perhaps, so much competition among the various lines as at tins time their rivalries almost assuming the proportions of the old railway freight wars and the competition in olden times between the Hudson River steamers. It should be, however, a serious subject of thought to our domestic economists this summer flight of our birds of fashion from our native shores : yet so long as our hotels maintain their high prices and the extortions upon travellers are unabated in the most charming of our sanitary and rural retreats, so long will intelligent Americana seek summer recreation in Europe. At some of the German spas life may be luxuriously maintained at two dollars per diem, and an ocean trip indulged in beside, the whole expense being far below what ordinary accomodations would cost in the mountains or by the sea in some secondoiftgq hotel In this country. —New York Herald, 12th July. -
