THE WELLINGTON RACES.
TO THE EDITOR. , Sir, — I see in Wednesday's issue a letter signed “ Hairless Horse,” asking the race .committee to hold a hack race for butchers only. Now, Sir, if the committee were to do so we should have every baker, grocer, and tailor—if he possessed a horse—asking the committee to have hack races for them. Also, Sir, I should like “ Hairless Horse ” to explain what difference there exists between the butchers and any other business in town. Sir, I cannot see it, without it is that the latter are more respectable. If “Han-less Horse” wants hack races let the proprietors give the prizes, and not the public. “Hairless Horse” says the regatta committee had races for firemen. Now, Sir, I think that the firemen are the most valuable volunteer organisation we have in the Colony, and therefore deserve every encouragement. For instance, let “ Hairless Horse ” get out of bed on a cold night, at the sound of the firebell, and go and assist at putting out fires, I should like to see how he would like it. “ Hairless Horse ” also speaks of the enjoyment it would be to sight-seers, I cannot see that either. I think a squad of firemen, with their brass helmets and scarlet coats, riding round the course, would be a much more enjoyable sight, to the ladies and children in particular. I must now conclude by hoping “Hairless Horse” will be more sensible in future, and not come forward as the butchers’ champion again ; or, as Sam Slick says, using dictionary and heavy artillery in a foolish cause.-—I remain, yours, Longtail Filly. Sept. 7. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —“Silk Jacket” jeeringly suggests that I should send my proposal to the stewards, but I decline to do so, having my own private reasons for not doing so.—Yours, <fec., Hairless Horse. , Sept. 7.
