[Press Telegraph Agency.] Greytown, Thursday. The Whaukaka Hotel, kept by Giles, owned by Haggerty, was burned down at 3 o’clock this morning. The origin of the fire is unknown. This makes the. third hotel destroyed by fire in the Wairarapa this year. Dunedin, Thursday. A German family living at Otahua have been severely burned. The husband, wife, and a child, were living in a tent. The woman took a billy of hot ashes into the tent before going to bed. The wind scattered them, and the tent caught fire. All the inmates were injured, and they were removed to the Dunedin Hospital. Invercargill, Thursday. To-day has been observed as a public holiday, the occasion being the laying the foundation stone of the new Athenamm building. The ceremony was performed by the local Lodge of Freemasons before a large assemblage. The proceedings passed off satisfactorily.
