A presentation of a valuable locket and necklace was made to Miss Alice May at the concert last night. The company proceeded to Napier by the Southern Cross to-day.

A seaman named Salmon was drowned at Kaipara in endeavoring to secure a dingy which had got adrift. The agent of the A.S.N. Co. has received a telegram from Sydney to the effect that the City of Melbourne, which leaves there for San Francisco on the 29th, will probably call at Auckland, leaving here on September 4. Gkahamstown, Wedneday.

Henry Koache, miner, had hoth legs broken this morning, in ascending the Queen of Beauty shaft. A loaded truck was on the cage at the same time, which partly slipped, and jammed his legs against the beam end of the shaft. Napier, Wednesday.

There is a talk of starting a company to make a branch railway from Havelock to the main line at Hastings, a distance of two and a half miles. The estimated cost is £7OOO. The movement is said to be well supported by the settlers in the district.

A meeting of the Acclimatisation Society was held yesterday afternoon. The Curator announced that upwards of 10,000 ova had been obtained from the trout in the gardens ; also that they had 42 young salmon alive and doing well. At the inquest oh the late fire an open verdict was returned, with a rider that greater precaution should be exercised when engines are used near inflammable material, and that an additional watchman should be appointed to the look-out tower. The Assembly has been occupied during the week in discussing the Local Government Bill. The Einaucial Statement will be made on Thursday, the 27th inst. Herald, in reference to the production of the “ Princess of Trebizonde.” At the annual horse sale, Little Barman was purchased by Mr. Combe, of New Zealand, for 390 guineas, and Renfrew Jack by Mr. Mclntosh, of New Zealand, for 4GO guineas.

The cable between Singapore and Batavia is still interrupted owing to repairs. The German expedition for the observation of the transit of Venus arrived by the mail steamer, and will proceed to the Auckland Islands. Mr. Parkes, in addressing his constituents, said in reference to the Californian service, that telegrams would be sent to Sir Charles Cowper to notify the English Crown Law Officers that the bond of £50,000 would be enforced against Hall’s co-partners. He said the service would be carried on. Madame Goddard, after disappointing the public at Bathurst, pursued a similar course in Sydney, whither, after being advertised for three concerts, she suddenly left for Melbourne. Strong Carlist bands are gathering about Santander, alarming the inhabitants, who have telegraphed for reinforcements, the garrison being weak.
