BOARD OF EDUCATION.

A meeting of the Board of Education was held in the Boardroom on Monday, at 11 o'clock. Present : The Hon. C. J. Pharazyn (in the chair), Rev. J. C. Andrew, Messrs. Toomath, Graham, and Hutchison. INTERVIEW WITH THE PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE. The Secretary read a letter from the Provincial Secretary, appointing an interview with the Executive at 11 o'clock. Tho members present waited on the Executive, and drew, their attention to the fact that the Board had explained their views in writing, and requested that the Executive would reply in writing also, a course which was assented to. lIANOITIKEI ELEOTION. A. letter from Mr. Watt was read, stating, as the result of the election for a member of the Board for that district, the return of Mr. Cash, by a majority of three over Mr. Patterson, the numbers being Cash 88, Patterson 85.

THE CITY ASSESSMENT. The Secbetaby stated that, in consequence of new buildings having been erected, great additions' had been made to the assessment. He had sent notices to all the owners that objections would be heard that day; but only one objection had been made to the valuation of the assessor. In reply to a question, Mr. S. Levy, the assessor, stated that seventy-five new buildings had been erected, which he had valued at £40,000. The objection received was that of Mr. Anderson, and was that the land being unproductive, the value at which it was assessed was too high. It was agreed that the assessment should be reduced from £OOO to £3OO. The remaining assessments were then confirmed by the Board. The Secretary then stated that Mr. Martin had objected to the rating of the Bank Hotel. He had objected last year, but was too late. The house was rated at the value of £2900, whereas it was open for sale at £IBOO. It was resolved that the following reductions should be made :—Mr. Martin from £2900 to £1600; Mrs.-Fletcher from £I3OO to £1000; Mr. Carmont from £IOOO to £750. CAKTEBTON 11ESEBVES. The consideration of an offer from Mr. McHughan to lease these reserves was postponed for inquiries to be made as to the value of the land and timber thereon. ASSESSMENT OP LOCAL BOAKDS. The Secbetaby said that he had received copies of the local assessments in the. Kangitikei district. Their consideration, however, was postponed 1 . MABTON SCHOOL. An application from Mr. Gillett for an increase of salary, on the ground of an increased number of scholars, and also for additional female assistance, was read. Mr. Toomath thought that the application could not be entertained, as the average number of children in attendance was only fiftyseven. The Board concurred in this view. teachers' claims. Several applications were received from teachers whose salaries had been reduced on the schools being taken over by the Board, praying that their case might be taken into consideration. The consideration of these applications was postponed ; Messrs. Hurley and Newlyn to attend on some future clay and prefer their claims in person. HILL STBEET SCHOOL. It was agreed that the amount of the valuation, as reduced by the Inspector, should be paid when the Board was in funds. SCHOOL AT BIVERDALE, The consideration of an application for a school in the Riverdale district was postponed. IXSPECTOB'S IiEPOKT. The consideration of the Inspector's Beport was also postponed until the next meeting. KATES COLLECTED. Mr. Toomath enquired what rates had been collected in the Wellington district, and what remained to be collected. The Secbetaby stated that a complete return would be ready at the next meeting. The Board then adjourned to the first Monday after a reply had been received from the Provincial Executive.
