If is stated that there are about 200 Chinese in the neighborhood of Greenstone Creek,. Westland, with a Chinese store, "and a gambling and opium house " in full swing." The Committee of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, in their annual report, make the following remarks on the trade of the Province: —The tobies of exports and imports for the year ending June 30 last, attached to this report, exhibit a steady and satisfactory increase. With the exception of flax, the prices of our staple products have been well maintained, and the Bcarcity of labor which has hitherto existed has been much lessened by the continuous stream of immigration now directed to our shores. The number of immigrants who have arrived in the Province during the year ending June 30 has been 5687, equal to 4635 statute adults. Among traders generally, business has been sound, and there have been few failures of importance during the year.
