General Macquarie, by a distribution of seeds and implements, attempted to induce the natives of Now South Wales to cultivate the ground. Among the packets of seeds wore some which contained fishhooks ; these, together with the' seeds, were given by the Govcrnotio the sable monarch, King Bungaree. Some time after tho'Governorinqiiired of him whether the seeds had yet come up, and to his surprise he was informed that the fish-hooks had not come up. Neither white nor black saw the joke.
