BOARD OF EDUCATION.
An extraordinary meeting of the members of the Board of Education, was held in the Board room yesterday, at 11 o’clock. Present: Kev. Mr. Andrew (in the chair); Messrs. Pharazyn, Toomath, and Graham. ' The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. HANGITIKEI ELECTION. The Secretary stated that he had telegraphed to Marton for the result of the election, but had not received any reply. ACTION OP THE PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE. The Secretary read copy of the letter he had, by instruction of the Board, written on Wednesday last, to His Honor the Superintendent, and stated that no answer had been received. RULES. The Chairman suggested that until they knew whether the Board would be enabled to carry on its functions, the motion of which Mr. Toomath had given notice, should stand over. At present their hands were tied, and it was uncertain whether the Board would continue or collapse. Mr. Toomath having concurred in this course, the consideration of his motion was postponed. THE INSPECTOR’S REPORT. Por similar reasons, the consideration of the Inspector’s report was also deferred. REES’S BEQUEST. The Secretary stated that no report had as yet been received from Messrs. Brandon and Quick on this subject. On the motion of Mr. Toomath, the following resolution was agreed to;—“That Messrs. Brandon and Quick have their attention called to the delay in forwarding to the Board a report on Bees’s Bequest; and are informed that the Board will meet again on Monday next, and if no report be furnished by that time, the Board must have 1 recourse to otherlegal advice on the subject!’! SOUTH-EAST TARATAHI SCHOOL. ' . A petition from some of the parents and guardians of children attending this school was read, asking the Board to reconsider thendecision with respect to dispensing with the services of the present master. The Board, however, saw no reason to alter their decision. POSTPONEMENTS. Several matters of routine were postponed until the ultimate fate of the Board shall have been approximately ascertained. GREYTOWN SCHOOL. Several letters were read on this subject—from Mr. T. Wakelin and Mr. Lucas. The action taken by the Secretary with the assent of the Chairman and Inspector, was confirmed by the Board. The Secretary was instructed to mite to Mr. Lucas, stating that the Board were not prepared to undertake the erection of a new building - at present, and that the delay had arisen from their inability to obtain from the Provincial Government; a satisfactory explanation with reference to the probable smns available. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read from Mr. Kelley, Wanganui, with reference to clerical assistance, arid the Secretary was instructed to reply that the Board would be guided by Mr, Watt’s recommendation in the matter. Several other letters were read, and replies agreed to. REFUND. On the motion of Mr. Toomath, a sum of money (£18), contributed formerly by the people of the Taita, was ordered to bo returned as applied for—for specific purposes—as soon as a local committee had been established. WAITOTARA. An application for a-school at Waitotara, for which a site had been offered, was read, and the Secretary instructed to write for further information. This concluded the business, and the meeting separated.
