The steamer Star of the South, which has arrived from Fiji, reports that it is supposed in Levuka that the vessel reported by the Cyphrenes to be ashore on Wallace Island is the French frigate Arcona. The Fijian news which she brings is generally unimportant. Mr. Von der Heyde has sat on fourteen Grand Juries, also on a special jury when damages were awarded to Macfarlane. He holds the commission of the peace, and in that capacity has signed many legal documents. If it is proved that he is an alien, serious complications will arise. The counsel for Craig has moved the Supreme Court for a rule to set aside the award in the arbitration case of Craig v. Macfarlane. It is understood that the settlement of all long standing feuds between Harris and Macfarlane has entirely fallen through, and this cause edehre of Auckland Province is likely to be continued. The arbitrators have awarded Capt. Casey £1625 for the salvage of the Miltiades. Napier, Thursday. The Rangatira, from Poverty Bay, has made the voyage in twenty-four hours, in. eluding three and a half hours stoppage at Gisborne. She leaves for Wellington tomorrow at 11 a.m. New Plymouth, Thursday. Large numbers of Natives have passed through the town on their way to Parihaka, where they are going to cultivate land.' Westpokt, Thursday. The body of Mrs. Carruthers, wife of the Town Clerk, was discovered on the sea beach, some miles north of Westport. An inquest has been held, and a verdict of “Drowned while in a state of temporary insanity” returned. Christchurch, Thursday. The Christchurch Trade have resolved to take steps for the establishment of a Trades’ Union. A sum of £IOO was subscribed this morning for Captains Hart, of the steamer Beautiful Star, both of whose legs were broken yesterday by the snapping of the hawser while towing the ship Ballochmoyle. Dunedin, Thursday.' The Star defends Mr. Creighton against Mr. Reader Wood’s attack, and says that his absence from the House has been caused by illness in his family. The Guardian says that Mr, Vincent Pyke is much better since his return from Wellington. Port Chalmers, Thursday. Mr. Creighton, M.H.R., is a passenger by the s.s. Ladybird for Wellington.
