COMMERCIAL.

The revenue collected at the Customs during the week ending August 1 amounted to £1523 12s. LONDON. Money Market,—We take tho following from the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Circular of June 2 “It is estimated that from various quarters about two million sterling of gold are on the way to this country, a large part of which will probably go to the Bank, and as in the present contracted condition of trade the internal demand is less than an average, a further reduction within a short time is considered not improbable. Quotations in the open market for two and three months’ bills are now 3 to 3£ per cent., with indications of increased ease." The Corn Market.— accounts are received of the growing crops in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Russia; but unfavorable reports have come from the South of Spain and Turkey, and from tho latter exports of grain have been prohibited. The advices from California are promising, and a general expectation is entertained of good harvests throughout the world, with a consequent fall in values. In the meanwhile, stocks are light both here and in France, and holders remain firm, hoping to realise at present rates, or possibly higher. New Zealand samples vary in quality and condition, and prices realised range from 58s. up to 655. or C6s. The Wool Market. —Writing on June 12, Messrs Jacomb, Son, and Co. report:—“ The second series of public sales of Colonial wools this year, which began on April 28, will close on June 16. French purchasers have been the mainstay of the market, and nearly twothirds of the quantity sold have been taken for export. About 2000 bales of good greasy wools have been bought for America, The Home trade have not stocked very largely, the Bradford district being especially fiat. New Zealand wools, both washed and in grease, are as a rule darker and heavier than last ! season, nor are the West Australian clips of growth or condition as before. As may be supposed, in the disposal of this very large quantity of wool, there have been considerable fluctuations and irregularity in values from time to time during the series ; but on the whole the market has shown a strength, increasing as the sales progressed, greater than most dared to hope for before the sales commenced." The New Zealand wools of the present clip are decidedly inferior, as a whole, to those of last season, being shorter and weaker in staple, and as a rule heavier and more open in character. In many instances, more especially in greasy sorts, too little attention is paid to the skirting of the fleeces, and several of the clips have likewise been indifferently washed. New Zealand Hemp. —Since the date of last report the market has remained in the same exceedingly depressed condition, buyers refusing to operate, not. withstanding concessipns being offered. There will be but Uttle revival until trade in the provinces is more satisfactory than it is at the present time, Belfast In particular, from several causes, suffering most severely. MELBOURNE. We take the following from the Age of the 23rd: “ The markets generally have exhibited little tendency to activity to-day, the only item of interest being the arrival of the steamship Amoy at Cape Otway this afternoon, bringing the first cargo of new season's teas direct from Foo Chow, consigned to Messrs. Lorimer, Marwood, and Rome. As usual, great interest is manifested in the cargo, and if liquoring is actively proceeded with to-morrow and Friday morning, there is nothing to prevent these teas from reaching consumers, not only in the metropolitan districts, but scores of towns in the interior, on Monday or Tuesday next. Sales of low congous are mentioned at 10|d., and a line of 150 half-chests was placed at Is. The balance of the cargo of Amoy teas ex Miss Kilmansegg, 1735 half-chests, found buyers, under the hammer, at 10d., lOjd., 10£d., 10? d., lid., and Hid. Sardines have been extensively bought by one firm, who have cleared the market of all offering at reasonable prices; we understand that 1100 cases have changed hands. Small sales of kerosene are mentioned at Is. sd. for Devoe's. Hum has again been quitted at 4s. 3d. Breadstuffsare very firm, with a slight inclination to improve. A parcel of 40 tons country flour was closed for at £l3 ss, Wheat was sold by auction at Cs. 4d. for a small lot. In feeding grains, some inferior oats were knocked down at 4s, Cd. to 4s, 7d. Maize has been sold at 4s. lOcl. As Instancing the facilities now available for the rapid despatch of shipping at this port, we may refer to the loading to-day of 6000 packages sugar, weighing 204 tons, into the steamer Albion at the wharf of the Yarraville Refinery, for New Zealand, in the short space of time of five hours and a half." Monckton Synnot’s report of 22nd July is as follows “ Grain and Flour.—During this week an improved demand has been manifested in flour, leading to some sales of parcels. Wheat is also wanted, and prices are much firmer; but transactions are limited as yet, the offerings being small. Oats are in fair demand, without forcing of sales. Maize has again been cleared off. Barley is very quiet. Wool. —Small lots of scoured only coming forward; prices firm. Sldns, Hides, and Tallow.—Skins show no alteration at 4s. to 7s. 6d. for green, and 4dL to Bd. for dry. Hides, 4d. to sid. ; calfskins, CJd. to 7Jd. Tallow is in good demand at £3l 10s. to £34 for mutton; £3O to £3l 10s. for beef, and £25 to £3O for mixed." BY TELEGRAPH. • AUCKLAND.
