[Pkess Telegraph Agency.] Auckland, Wednesday. The mail steamer City of Adelaide has been detained till six o’clock to-morrow (Thursday) morning. The master of the Papua, which has arrived from Eoro tonga, reports the wreck of the schooner Tanner (?) at the Islands. The schooner Herald, from Fiji, brings news to June 28, but nothing'of importance. The Government troops had achieved another victory over the mountaineers of Vita Levu, when eighty of the enemy were killed. The schooner Dauntless has arrived from Hew Caledonia, and reports the schooner Mary Stewart a total wreck at the How Hebrides. The crew were picked up in an open boat at sea, and taken to Noumea. Admiral Ribout has arrived at Noumea from France, to enquire into the escape of Rochefort. All the Communists will be removed to the Island of Pines and another island, to be selected. Bateman has been sent to France to fulfil his term
of imprisonment. The convict executione was murdered by one of the convicts on the 20th June. The murderer was afterwards guillotined. Duels are very prevalent. Tliree took place on the 20th Juno, one between Lieutenants Devarenuee and Guillerain, of theGensdarmes. The latter was killed. Permission to fight was given by the Governor, who attended the funeral, and addressed the soldiers upon upholding their honor, even at the cost of life. Lyttelton, Wednesday. The state of the Northampton's immigrants, at the quarantine stations at Camp Bay and Ripa Island, is kept private. Cheistohubch, Wednesday. The weather has been cooler to-day. The rivers are high, but there are no floods. In the Supreme Court, Charles Hotham Broughton,' for obtaining money under false pretences, has been sentenced to three years penal servitude ; W. E. Collins, for larceny, to twelve months.; and William Thompson, for horse-stealing, to two years. Herbert Meyer, indicted for larceny, was discharged. Gbahamstown, Wednesday. The Manukau Company have just completed retorting. The total yield from general stuff and from specimens was 2259 ounces. This includes lodgments previously reported. The general crushing continues. More rich stone was knocked out yesterday. The Orange Lodges celebrate them anniversary by a dance on the 13th. The Cure has struck a new reef. It is believed to be a branch of the Manukau lode, which turned out such rich stone lately. Dunedin, Wednesday. In the Criminal Court to-day, the following sentences were passed : —Lucy Leighton, for robbery from the person, twelve months; John Jenkins, for arson, twelve months ; Thomas Conley, for biting a constable’s nose off, two years; Alexander Gillon, for forgery, two years; John Campbell Abanetty on a first charge of embezzlement, two years ; second, one year ; and for false pretences, six months,
cumulative ; John Morrison, on four charges of forgery, for the first, five years; for the others, one year each, cumulative. The trial of Louis Bounison, for attempted wife murder, is pty. oeeding. ■ ' '
