PORT CHALMERS. July 7.—Sailed : Syren, brig, for Auckland ; Wellington, s.s., for Lyttelton. BLUFF. July 7.—Arrived, 8.50 a.m.: Tararua, from Dunedin. Sailed : City of Dunedin, ship, for Oregon, U.S. The Time Ball may be used to-day for rating chronometers. To obtain Greenwich mean time, subtract llh 30m from the Time Ball time. The three-masted schooner Emu, with auxiliary screw, ia now trading between Auckland and Eussell. A permit has been granted her to trade without carrying passengers until her machinery is passed by the Government Engineer. Messrs. Cruickshank and Co., the Auckland agents of the steamship Hero, received a telegram via the South, stating that the steamer will leave Melbourne for that port, via Sydney, on the 2nd inst. She may, therefore, be expected on or about the 11th inst. The following reference to the inquiry into certain charges made against the surgeon-superintendent of the ship Loch Awe is made in the New Zealand Herald of the 2nd inst: —" The late doctor of the Loch Awe handed in to the Immigration Officer yesterday his written statement with reference to the charges preferred against him by a number of the immigrants by the vessel. The statement will not be made public ; indeed it would require the aid of an expert to decipher the hieroglyphics contained therein. The document will by forwarded by the Immigration Commissioners, with the notes of the proceedings, to Wellington, to be submitted to the Government, who will decide what further course Bhall be taken in the matter." The s.s. Taranaki, Captain E. Wheeler, arrived from the North yesterday afternoon with a great number of saloon and steerage passengers. Among the latter were twenty immigrants, all Danes, and none of whom could speak or understand a word of English. ■ The Taranaki left Manukau at 1 p.m. on the 3rd ; arrived at Taranaki at 7 a.m. on the 4th, left at 9 a.m. ; arrived at Nelson at 11.50 p.m., leaving at midnight on the Gth. Picton wa3 reached at 0.30 a.m. on the 7th, and left at 10.40 a.m., arriving at Wellington at 4 pm„ During the last night of her trip the steamer experienced very tempestuous weather. The s.s. Tararua, which sailed for the Bluff from Port Chalmers, en route to Melborne, at 4 p.m. on Monday, arrived at the former place at 8.50 a.m. yesterday morning. The s.s. Itangatira, Captain Lloyd, arrived from the East Coast at 4.30 p.m. yesterday. She left Wellington at 5.30 p.m. on the 2nd inst.; arrived at Napier at p.m. on the 3rd, left at 10 p.m. on the 4th for Poverty Bay, but meeting the Halcione, from London, returned with her in tow ; left her in a good anchorage and proceeded on the voyage at midnight; reached Poverty Bay at 10 a.m. on Sunday; got underway at 10 p.m., arrived at Napier at 0 a.m. on the Gth, and left again at 3 p.m., arriving as above. Experienced strong S. E. weather during the upward passage, and fresh N.W. breeze, with fine weather, on the run to Wellington. The Omeo, after calling at Timaru, and there loading 400 tons of grain, which she transhipped into the Atrato at Lyttelton, sailed from the latter port at 11.45 a.m. yesterday, so that she maybe expected here about 8 o'clock this morning. The steamer Albion arrived at the wharf yesterday morning from Melbourne, via the Southern ports. She reports of the round .trip :—Left Wellington at halfpast 7 a.m. on the 13th. Arrived at Nelson at O p.m. same day, and sailed again at half-past 8 a.m. on the 14th, arriving at Greymouth at 4 a.m. on the 15th. Left Hokitika for Melbourno at 2 p.m. same day, and experienced light variable winds, with lino weather, on the passage. X'assed Kent's Group at 1 p.m. on the lath, and Wilson's Promontory at 5 p.m., entering Port Phillip Heads at 1 a.m. on the 20th, having performed another quick passage of four days ten hours. The Albion left Melbourne with the English mail on board at 0 p.m. on the 27th. She experienced head winds throughout the passage, but made a rapid run of four days sixteen hours. She arrived at the Bluff at 3.40 p.m., and sailed for Dunedin at 7 p.m., arriving at 0 a.m. next morning. She has made a rapid run up the coast, in line weather. A heavy sea was experienced in the Strait.
