[Press Telegraph Agency.] Auckland, Friday, John Pascoe and James Dobbins have been arrested for murdering William Wright, a carter, in a Maori house of ill-fame, off Upper Queen street. They knocked him down and kicked him, breaking his jaw in two places and inflicting other injuries that resulted fatally. In the Police Court the inquiry into tho charge of incendiarism against Alexander Brown has been closed, after many days hearing. Tho prisoner was committed for trial. New Plymouth, Friday. Colonel Gordon arrived last night, and will inspect the Volunteers to-day. Christchurch, Friday. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received telegraphic advices from London of the arrival of the ships Duke of Edinburgh and Star of India, from Lyttelton ; and Dunfillan, from Otago. Also, of the departure from London of the Carisbrook Castle, Columbus, Strathnavar, Loch Earn, and Tweed. The vessels which wore being loaded by the company at the end of June were : —Eurynome, for Wellington ; Lemon Castle, for Otago ; and Stanley Castle, for Auckland. The local committee of the Colonial Bank of New Zealand are holding meetings in various parts of the Province, and are receiving good support. A large number of shares have been applied for.
