Hibbett, billiard-marker at the Club Hotel, Masterton, was drowned on Sunday afternoon while attempting to cross the Kuamahunga on horseback when the river was up. The horse escaped. They are searching for the body today. Geahamstown, Monday. The men working in the Pumping Association’s shaft have struck for nine sliillings a day. The manager has acceded to the demand. It is reported that a coalition is effected between the Pumping Association and the Bright Smile Company, by which the drainage contributions will be recovered from the Wai Karaka. The payments will be divided in the proportion of 70 per centum to the Association and 30 per cent, to the Bright Smile, At the adjourned licensing meeting today , two new applications, and also some applications refused at the previous meeting, on the ground that one applicant was convicted of drunkenness, and two others for breach of the Pawnbrokers’ Act, were granted after the owners of the houses substituted other names for those of the original applicants. A garottrng case has occurred at Grafton. The supposed perpetrator was arrested. Dr. Van Heokeren and a man named Burdett are remanded for procuring abortion on a Paramatta resident named Hanks.
