The Superintendent has received a letter from his Excellency the Governor, statin" that he expects to leave Mamikau in the Blanche to-morrow, and to arrive here about Eriday. The Provincial Council will he prorogued this afternoon. Auckland, Tuesday. Mr. Mackay, the Government agent for Waikato, threatens an action for libel against the ThauiCJ AdivUicriov stating that he had made purchases of laud in the Upper Thames district on his own account. Telegrams from Rotorua state that twenty shocks of earthquake were felt at Ohinemutu on Sunday night. No damage was done. The Natives are petitioning the Government to stop further purchases . f land till the Native title has been individualized. Pears are entertained for the safety of the cutter Agues, which left Mauukau for Waikato Heads eleven days ago. She has not been seen or heard of since. She had a crew of three men on board. Napier, Tuesday. A man named James Power, a fencer, on Purvis Bussell’s station at Waipukarau, was seized with a fit and fell into the fire on Monday, and died this morning from the effects of the injuries he received. The Supreme Court was occupied all day in hearing the case of Saunders, charged with buying grass seed which he knew to be stolen. The case is not concluded. Hokitika, Tuesday. The vote of want of confidence in the newly-appointed Provincial Executive lapsed in the absence of the mover. The Provincial Solicitor, and afterwards the Provincial Secretary, made statements, but said nothing important beyond this, that the Government would adopt the sliding scale as regards household rates in the Education Bill. Port Chalmers, Tuesday. The s.s. Atrato has bean admitted to pratique. One hundred and fifty-nine of her passengers are to he taken to the barracks on the Quarantine Station to-morrow, but not to be placed under the quarantine regulations. No fresh cases have occurred on board. She brings twenty-eight saloon passengers. Dunedin, Tuesday. The Provincial Council have passed a resolution to repay sixpence per ounce of the duty on gold to exporters on every ounce of gold produced in the Province during the current year.
