Eees and Mr. Dargaville are also spoken of as probable candidates. The debate on tho Financial Statement resulted in the Government carrying the second reading by a large majority. The Governor’s ball was attended by 500 guests. The total stakes paid over in connection with the Autumn Eace Meeting were £1)38. Mr. Watt takes £l4-1 ; Mr. McEae, £l-10 ; Mr. Young, £l3O. Wanganui, Saturday. Grand Colonial Steeplechase—Butcher Boy (Nelson horse), 1 ; Supple Jack, 2 ; Isleman, 3 ; rest nowhere. Maiden Plate —The .Arrow, 1 ; Euchre, 2 ; Yorkshireman, 3. The meeting was well attended, and tho racing was good. Grahamstown, Saturday. The Customs’ revenue for the month amounts to £IOOS 13s. -Id.—the heaviest collection for some time, Napier, Saturday. Mr. W. W. Carlilo, of the “Hawke’s Bay Herald,” is elected M.P.C. for the Mohaka district, unopposed. Alexandra, Saturday. A messenger has just arrived from Orahiri, and reports no news about Purukutu. He is supposed to bo dead in the bush. Hokitika, May 30. The twenty immigrants who wore forwarded here by the Waipara, from Wellington, obtained employment immediately. Christchurch, Sunday. The Opera Company have sailed for Wellington. At the benefits of Eainford, Hallam, the orchestra, and tho chorus, the houses were crowded to overflowing. New Plymouth, Saturday. Major Atkinson, in the Provincial Council read a telegram from the Premier, stating that the Government had determined to limit the number of immigrants for the next seven mouths to 25,000. The land regulations have been passed.
