Previous to his departure for Auckland, a Bible and Prayer Book, handsomely bound, were presented by the congregation of St. Peter’s Church, Te Aro. to E. Withers, Esq , Quarter-Master of 65th Regiment, with the following inscription: — FTIEBENTED TO QUARTER-MASTER WITHERS, Or the 65th Regiment, BY THE CONGREGATION OF ST. PETER’S CHURC#, As a slight token Of their Grateful Remembrance of his Valuable Services In conducting for 3 years THE CHOIR OF ST. PETEK’s. The following is Mr. Withers* letter acknowledging the gift:— Wellington, N. Z., September 25,1858. Dear Sir, —I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of a very e’egant Bible and Prayer Book from you and the Congregation of St, Peter’s Church, Te Aro, as a token of their regard and esteem for my exertions in behalf of their Choir, which I have had the pleasure of conducting for the last three years. Believe me, Sir, when I say that I cannot sufficiently admire this gift, not alone for its elegance, but for the sacred character of the works themselves; and also coming, as they do, from that body with whom I have had the privilege of meeting for so many years in the house of God, and of whom, to the last day of my life, I shad think with love and respect; and I request that you will receive yourself, and convey to them, my most sincere thanks for this very valuable present, and regret that I cannot remain among them, Believe me to remain, Sir, Yours, <tc., <fcc., E. WITHERS. The Rev. Arthur Stock, St. Peter’s Church, Te Aro.
