REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE FOR REPAIRING THE BEACH ROAD, &c.

The Committee for repairing the Beach road have great satisfaction in presenting to the subscribers, on the completion, of the works, a statement of the way in which the amount received has been expended. The total amount of subscriptions is £100 125., to which has been added by the Government the sum of £134 ; these sums have been expended in the following manner : — A good footpath has been formed along the whole line of Lamb ton- quay, commencing at Pipitea Street and ending at the lower end of Willis Street. A curbing of round stones has been placed along the whole length except a distance of about 300 yards, where it was deemed desirable that the curb should not be laid down on account of the narrow and temporary nature of the road : totara posts have been fixed at convenient distances to protect the path from wheeled carriages. The footpath has been raised in many parts and well gravelled, and gravel has also been laid on the path from the commencement of Willis Street to the new church Te Aro.

A large brick drain has been formed at Kumutoto and the approaches on either side considerably raised, and a large brick drain has been formed at the end of Willis Stieet. Besides these, eight smaller brick drains have been formed iti different parts for the purpose of carrying off the water. AH the works have been performed by contract- according to tenders previously received, or the rate of payment has been fixed according to the scale of previous tenders. The works have been principally carried on under the able direction of R. 1 ark, Esq., who has given his services gratuitously to the public, and the Committee feel they are much indebted to that gentlemen for his valuable assistance. The Committee deeply regiet they have been unable to effect any repairs in the roadway beyond the drains which have been formed — owing to the failure on the part of the carters to complete their engagements. The sum of £46 was promised by them for this object, which with an equal amount to be contributed by the Government would have enabled, the Committee, from facilities which were offered during the progress of the works, to have made substantial improvements in the roadway, but they have been prevented from availing themselves of these facilities for the want of necessary funds. (Signed) R. Stokes, W. M. Bannatyne, G. Moore, C. E. Yon Alzdorf, W. Spinks.
