PUBLIC MEETING.
AT a public meeting held at Barrett's Hotel, on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 1844, Samuel Revans, Esq., in the chair, It was moved by Mr. J. Woodward, seconded by F. J. Knox, M.D.— 1. That the Cemetery situated between Bolton and Sydney Streets, which was laid out for the public use, cannot be diverted from its original purpose without doing violence to the rights of property, and wounding the feelings of persons who have inteired relatives or friends in that place. (Carried unanimously.) Moved by the Rev. S. Ironside, seconded by the Rev. J. Watkin :—: — 2. That the portion of the Cemetery which is now proposed to be set apart for the exclusive use of the Church of England, contains the graves of persons of all denominations, and moreover that it is the only part of the land that is at present available. (Carried unanimously ) Moved by Mr. Robert Hart, seconded by -Mr. Water's :—: — 3. That the petition now read be adopted and forwarded to Charles Hindley, Esq., M.P., for presentation to the House of Commons, and that a memorial ou the same subject be presented to the Governor. (Carried unanimously.) ' Moved by Mr. John Wade, seconded by Mr. James Smith: — 4. That the Chairman of this meeting be requested to transmit copies of the forgoing resolutions, and of the petition and memorial therein referred to, to her Majesty's Secretary of State for the Colonies, — and that the Chairman be_ requested to urge upon Charles Hindley, Esq.," the importance of moving the House of Commons on this subject ; and that the following members of the House be requested to support the same, — Sir C. E. Scuith, Bart. ; J. A. Roebuck ; B. Hawes; J. Hume; J. T. Leader; and T. S. Duncombe, Esqs. (Carried unanimously.) Moved by Mr. J. Wallace, seconded by Mr. W. Lyon : — 5. That the following gentlemen be requested to act as a Committee for the purpose of preparing the necessary documents, and doing all in their power to carry out the objects of the present meeting : — Messrs. R. D. Hanson, Robert Hart, W. W. Lyon, J. H. Wallace, Rev. S. Ironside, John Wade, F. J. Knox. M. D., Mr. Water's Mr. J. Smith, Mr. Edward's, Mr. Webb, Mr. Harding, Mr. J. Woodward, Hon. Sec. And that Messrs. Hanson, Lyon, and Woodward form a deputation to wait on Colonel Wakefield, and request him to execute a deed of trust in accordance with the original intentions of the New Zealand Company. (Carried unanimously.) Samuel Revans, Chairman. The Chairman having vacated the chair it was resolved unanimously, — That the thanks of this meeting be given to Mr. Richmond for his kindness in allowing the use of the room, and to S. Revans, Esq., for his very able conduct in the chair.
