THE AULD BRIG.

The preservative operations at Ayr Anld Brig are proceeding steadily, says a Scottish paper, about twenty men now being engaged on the ancient structure. The larger number of the workmen are employed in the work of pointing the open joints and cracks in the outer stone-work of the bridge. It has been found that comparatively little of the lime forming the original binding material remains. A good many of the stones, particularly at the cut-water, were found so much decayed that they had to be replaced. A start bas also been made with the opening of trenches on the roadway of* the bridge. At the southern pier two concrete walls three feet thick have been built at right angles to and between the existing spandrils, and excavations which have been made expose the top of the centre of the arch and part of the spandril walls, and n beginning has been made with the appli cation of the grouting' machine to‘ this part of the edifice.
