At last a little gaiety has cheered us ; outside Exhibition precincts. , For- ! tunately the fine weather held fairly | well throughout the holidays, though j Easter Monday was marred a little by 1 showers of rain. The racecourse was,' of ! course, the great attraction of the day, j and large numbers went out to Riecarj ton without in the least thinning the attendance at the Exhibition, which I j believe was over 40,000. J Some handsome autumn gowns were worn at the races. Mrs Arthur Rhodes had a beautiful tailored dress of palest fawn cloth, black hat with plumes, and long fur motoring coat; Mrs Boyle was in delicate grey cloth and large hat to match; Mrs Pitman had a smart black costume and becoming hat; Miss Boyle was in mauve cloth and hat; Mis Pitman wore a ivme red gown and white hat; Mrs Chirnside (Melbourne) was in cream ninon and pale pink hat; Mis Gordon (Napier) was in black with I touches of cream; Mrs Pyne was in j purple cloth and large purple hat; Mrs I Davidson (England) wore a lovely gown of violet cloth, with toque to match and i rich sables; Mrs Kettle had a tailor gown of dull green cloth, and green hat with ! touches of pink; Miss Kettle was in j cream cloth with green and pink hat; I Mis Williamson (Hawke’s Bay) was m black and white checked cloth and large black hat; Mrs Herbert Elworthy was in grey with pink hat; Miss Cleveland (MelI bourne) was in green, and green toque; among others present Avere Mrs .A. j Rutherford, Mrs Hall, Mr and Miss Cow- | lishaw. The suite of rooms Avas handsomely draped in crimson and white, which , formed a fine background for the ferns ; that were lavishly used in the 'decoration scheme. Mrs Wardrop wore a handsome ’ gOAvn of yelloAV brocade and lace; Mrs j Arthur Rhodes was in yellow taffetas I and lace; Mrs Boyle Avore black taffetas 1 and eequinned net; Miss Boyle, pale pink taffetas;. and lace; Mrs Pitman was in black taffetas; Pitman wore pale blue taffetas; Miss Denniston was in mauve silk and lace; the Misses Burns were in pale pink; Mies Clifford wore Arhite satin and chiffon; Muss Macdonald, cream silk; Miss Humphreys, cream satin and pink roses j Mis® Cook, crimson silk; Messrs Reeve, Williams Boyle, Dalgety, Macdonald, Laing-Meaeon, Acland, Cook, Harper, and Moorhouse were also among those present.

Ou Wednesday afternoon Mrs GeorgeGould gave a large tennis party, but the cold wind drove the guests indoors, where some very pleasant musio contributed by Mrs GoAver-Burns. and Misses Pitman and Dennis was enjoyed. Mm Gould recerved her guests wearing a smart oostume of pale blue cloth relieved with silk, and prettv cream Leghorn hat; Mr® Tanner Avas in white embroidered muslin, and had a Avhite hat; Mm Pitman wore a pale blue costume and hat; Miss Pitman looked well in white cloth; Mrs Williameon had a costume of dark green panne cloth and a green hat with feathers; Mrs GoAver-Burns was in pale grey; Mrs Davidson had a handsome gown of grey cloth, Tnack hat; Mrs Boyle had a coat and v skirt costume of navy blue and navy blue hat; Mr® H. Ootterill Avas in Avhite cloth and white hat; Mm John Williams wore black, also Mrs Elworthy. Also present Avere Misses Elworthy, E. 'Reexee, Williams, Campbell and NancarrOAr.
