RAILWAY EXTENSION
; A REQUEST REFUSED. : DUNEDIN, April 4. A - large ’ gathering of members of the Brighton. Railway League, supported, by reuresentatives of the Trades and Labour 'Council, was introduced to the Acting-Prime Minister- by Mr D.. Reid, M.H.R., who said that this railway had been before the department how for some time. It was felt that if -the line were extended from "Walton Park tc Brighton (twelve miles . south of Dunedin) it would prove a paying line, and 'would be largely patronised by people, besides .being of great benefit for the carriage of produce. The Acting-Premier said that , this did not strike him as one of the urgent works that required attention. If the deputation (knew, of some of the experiences of tlie back-block settlers, he was sure they would-agree with him when he said 'tliat their necessities . were greater than those of settlers who were living; within seven Miles of a (railway. He j had Made .up his mind not to take in ha nd; at j present ,a. hy more r ailway works until some of those in hand we: ? completed. . They could.get-from Burn-, side to Brighton now" for, 2s 6d; and he only wished that settlers throughout New Zealand generally were in as fortunate a position. When some of tho. urgent works were; out of hand would be the time for the deputation to make, its representations. ' .
