BUILDINGS AND CONTRACTS

TENDERS ACCEPTED. A contract had been let to Messrs Rand E. Tingey for repairs and painting at the Basilica in Hill street. Mr W. Jennings lias secured the contract for repairs and painting at the tea kiosk and power-house at Kelburne. Messrs Campbell and Burke have started work on the general alterations and additions to Messrs Sargood, bon and Ewen’s warehouse. Mr S. D. Cronin, architect, has accepted the tender of Mr J. Greig for the erection of a residence at Kilbirme. Thirteen tenders were received. The contract price is about £335. Messrs Lees and Son, of Dunedin, have secured ilie contract for the fittings, etc., to the National Bank of New Zealand in Grey street. TENDERS TO CLOSE. Tenders for the erection of hotel premises have been extended till April 6th by Messrs Thomas Turnbull and Son, architects. Tenders for the erection of a homestead at Manawa, Temii, close on April 12th. —Mr John S. Swan, architect. Tenders are invited for a brick pavilion for the Wellington Bowling Club, closing on April 12tli.—Messrs Penty and Blake, architects. Tenders close to-day for the erection of tho Post Office Hotel. —Mr J. Charlesworth, arch i tect. GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS.

Additions to the Wellington Receiving Home—Plans, specifications, and conditions may be seen at the office of Mr John Campbell, Government’Architect. Closing date, April 11th. Tenders will bo received until April 24th for additions in brick and stone to Parliament Buildings.—Mr John Campbell, Government Architect.

Erection of additions to warehouse in Dixon street close on April 11th with Messrs Crichton and McKay, architects. For the erection of the Criterion Hotel at Blenheim thirteen tenders have been received. The accepted tender will be known in the course of a few days. The new building which is being erected for the “Taranaki Herald' 1 ’ and “Budget,” in Currie street. New Plymouth, will shortly be completed, and will be a handsome building of two floors, with a frontage to the street of 36ft and a dentil of about 70ft. The front of the structure is broken by eight single windows, the entrance being at the side. Mr A. Cliff is the contractor.

The building trade in New Plymouth continues to be good, and contractors appear to have plenty of work on hand.

A new factory is about to be erected in York street for ’Mr J. W.

Thompson, and will be used by Messrs Alcock and Co., for the manufacture of billiard-tables. The building will have a frontage to the street of 39ft, with a depth of 50ffc, and will be of two floors. The ground floor is to be used as a machine-room, 30ft x 24ft, a slating-room 36ft x 24ft, and a tim-ber-rack 25ft x 7ft. The first floor will be utilised as a work-room, and will be 49ft x 36ft. The structure is to be finished on the outside with pressed bricks and cement facings. Mr J. Bennie is the architect.

Three two-story residences are in course of erection in Hanson -street, Newtown. These houses are being built bv Mr S. Bethell for Mr H.

Hunt, the contract price being £2OOO. At a meeting held at Ilawera during last week, over £IOO was collected towards establishing a technical school.

Mr A. R. Willis, the well-known contractor in the Wairarapa district., was the successful tenderer for a largo woolshed, to be erected on the property of Messrs Buchanan Bros, at Tupurupuru. The engine-shed at Waiouru is now almost completed, and tenders are being called for the erection of railway station buildings, at both Waiouru and Turangarere.

Ohalcune bids fair to become a prosperous town, when the timber industry is established. Already the township is growing rapidly, and new buildings are commenced every weeJs, carpenters being particularly bu*y. Quite a little commotion was caused when it became known that those who had erected their business places on the main road, on the river bank, were given notice • by the Public Works Department to remove same at once. Amongst the buildings to be removed are a store, a bakehouse, and a fruit-shop.

Messrs Murray and Bloom have recently started a brick and pipe works on the Wainui road, Taihape, which ought to prove a great convenience to the district. A large new building has been added to the Wanganui Freezing Company’s works at Castlecliff for meat preserving purposes. Messrs Russell and Bignell, of Wanganui, who are the contractors for

the erection of the Waikato Hospital at Hamilton, have the work well on the way. This hospital is to be built on the most modern lines, with special attention to sanitary requirements and ventilation. The whole building will be of brick,'with cement facings, while the internal work is to bo finished with Keen’s cement. The operating room will be a special feature, and is to be fitted up on the most modern lines. The contractors expect to have the work completed in about twelve months’ time. The contract prico is £16,000.
