RIFLE SHOOTING

KARORI v. POST AND TELEGRAPH. On Saturday the Karori Rifle Club fired two matches, and, were successful in both. One team met the Poet and Telegraph Rifles (winners of the Battalion Shield) at Trentham, while the other engaged the Petone Rifle Club on the Waiwetu range. The ranges in both snatches were 200, 500, and 600 yards, seven shots at each. At Trentham the wind varied from five degrees left to dead-in, making the conditions changeable throughout. The Karori men won by 52 points. At 600 yards the best scores were put up by Thomas (Karori) 30, and Randell (Karori) 29. Thomas was top scorer in the match with the fine total of 92. Scores:—

PETONE v. KARORI. On the Waiwetu range, the Mayor of Karori (Mi- A. C. Pearce) accompanied the Karori team, and by his enthusiasm set a fine example to his men. Petone had to draw upon the services of two juniors, but one of them, Cook, made the good sco**e of 83, which was 4 points above the average of his team. The strong northerly wind was very gusty at times, requiring from two degrees left to t'n degre ; ieft windage, so under; these circumstances big scoring vas not looked for. G. Halliday (Karori) was top-scorer in the match with the fine total of 95, W. Ballinger (Petone) being next with 92, and A. Ballinger (Petone) and J. Burns (Karori) following with 90 each. Failing light made matters difficult at 600 yards. Karori, /shooting steadily, finished up winners {by 66 points. The Mayor of Karori (Mr A C. Pearce) congratulated the men on the sportsmanlike spirit in which the match had been fought, and said that, while naturally very proud -f the Karori win, he wished Petone better luck next r -'-ime. The club will continue its competitions next Saturday.- It is worthy of note that the nineteen Karori men who took part in these matches averaged 85J. Scores : Karori Rifle Club.

WELLINGTON GUARDS

The “A” class of the above company held its second competition for class trophies at Trentham range on Saturday, at the . 500 and 600yds ranges. The shooting was not quite up to the standard, owing to a, bad light and changeable, choppy wind. There are three more matches/ required to decide the winners. In addition to the company prizes, Private Newton has given a gold medal for the highest grand aggregate in the matches.
