ACCIDENTS.
AUCKLAND, August 24. A remarkable accident which, but for prompt action of an engine-driver, must have terminated fatally, occurred at Morningside to-day to Miss Smith, a passenger by the 9 o’clock ’ ’bus from Kingsland to Avondale. At one point on the route the i-oad crosses the railway line, and when crossing the diver of the ’bus failed to notice au _ approaching train. The passengers, however, saw the danger and called out. The ’bus got clear before the train reached the crossing, but in the excitement of the moment Mias Smith essayed a jump, and fell across the line. The engine-driver of the train fortunately saw the incident and immediately applied the brakes, with the result that when the engine reached the lady it was going at a very slow pace, and the cowcatcher pushed her out of danger. She received a number of bruises, and is suffering from shock.
