Having in view the interest i lie publio has in regard to the weight of “pound butter” as retailed locally, the Labour Department instructed its thief Inspector of Factories to visit some of the principal groceries in Wellington and test the weight of the standard brands of butter on the market. The result of this inspection should serve to allay the feeling of the public that there is any systematised attempt to give short weight on the part of suppliers. Of 125 pounds of butter carefully weighed there was on the aggregate only a shortage of three-quarters of an ounce. The report shows that there were small shortages here and there in certain brands, but just as often the weight was in favour of the purchaser. Perhaps the fraction short on the whole would have been the other way if in each case the butter bad been fresh from the factory on the day the test was made, for as is well known these© is a percentage of water in butter yumd m them must b® evaporation,, partacniariy as aom© grocers keep their hnttffT -fm m messr wimamu
