WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The town has been enlivened by the presence of large numbers of natives who came from various districts to attend a tangi over the body of a local native girl, Annie, who died at Waikanae, and whose body was brought through per train with a large attendance of the Ngatiraukawa tribe. There must have been at least 500 present. At the monthly meeting of the Harbour Board several accounts were passed for payment and attention was given to several matters of urgency, viz., the overhaul of the wharf, the necessity of a new bridge over the Waitara river. A deputation, consisting of Mes-.'rs J. M. Foreman (chairman of the Clifton C.C.), G. H. Stubbs (chairman of the Harbour Board), and Mr W. T. Jennings, M.H.R., was appointed- to bring the latter matter under the attention of the Government. The dredge employees were given notioe of th suspension of their services pro tern. Dredgemaster Longstaff having resigned, and Mr Stitt for the position was discussed at some length. Leave of absence was granted to the secretary, Mr J. Cameron. The sale of Crown sections in Waitara Biorough took place last. week. Messrs A. W. Ogle and H. ivi at thews being the principal buyers. Sections brought in some cases over the upset, others) tlie upset only, whilst a few failed to find a purchaser, £l3 10s to £5 being the range. A shooting match between Waitara Volunteers and Urenui Rifle Club, has resulted in a victory for the latter. Grossman (Urenui) made top score of 95 out of a possible 105. Mr Malone paid the town a visit, and a meeting is convened for Friday to consider th id part of the district’s share in contributing to assisting exhibits at the Christchurch International Exhibition. Mr H. M. Lund, stationmaster, is away in Westland, and on his departure a quiet evening was spent at the Martonic Hotel, when he was presented with a shaving toilet outfit. The homecoming is eagerly looked for by the boys of the tin can brigade.
