TAKAKA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
On Saturady, June 23rd -our footballers had a regular' gala day, roi on that date the great Seven-a-Side Tournament took place. Teams representiiig Aorere, Colliiigwood, T&kakii urxd Golden Bay clubs took part in the games. There was a fairly large attendance of spectators on the field to watch the play of the stations teams, which was-of a very high order, and the patrons of football were all highly satisfied with the afternoon’s amusement.
The first match was between Collingwood A. v. Takaka A. seniors?, and resulted in a win for Collingwood by G points to 3 V after a real good go. The next was betwee 11 Bay V. Colling wood 8., and was rather onesided, for the Bay boys were rather too much for their opponents. Result: Bay 16 points, Colli ngwood nil.
The third match was a .junior one between Colli ngwood and Golden Bay, and was won by Colling wood by 0 points to nil after a fairly good game. The Takaka B. v. Aorere seniors then took the field, and after a good fight Takaka won by 9 points to nil. The Takaka and Golden Bay junions next lined up, and after a real good go, in which both teams showed capita’ form, the Takaka juniors won by 5 to nil.
Golden Bay and Collingwocd seniors then met in/ the semi-final, which proved to to the best played game of the day, Collingwood eventually willing by 10 points to 9. The Takaka juniors defeated the Collingwood juniors by G points to nil, thus winning the junior competition. • The final match was between the Colli ngwood A. and Takaka B. tea met and was won by Colli ngwood, points being, Collingwocd 13, Takaka 5. Thus ended a real good afternoon’s sport. The takings at the gate amounted to just on to £lO. A pigeon match under tlio auspices of the n&wly-formeci Gun Club, took place on Wednesday, July 4th, in Mr A. Mason’s paddock. In spite of the threatening aspect of the weather a fair attendance of on-lcokers pur in an appearance. The winner turned up in Mr It. Haldane, who got four put of the six birds fired at, Dr Adame gaining second prize after firing off a tie with Mr Fuggle. This club has mad© a. very good start, and seems to be nopular in this district. Mi’ C. H. Storie, consulting engineer to the Prospecting Syndicate, has returned to Takaka from his visit to Auckland-. He was to have left for the seen© of his find on Friday, but on aceouilt of the boisterous weather had to postpone his trip for a day or ’two. Mr Storie intends to bring down samples of stone to ascertain whether it is as rich as that which he obta’ned on the surface. The tunnel has been driven about 40 feet. It is sincerely to be hoped that the reef will pan out all right, for if it does it will be a good thing for this place. An entertainment in aid of the Pioneers’ Memorial, to be held here shortly, ought to be a great success if the programme is any guide, for there will be a spelling bee, waltzing competition, .guessing competition, and other comical items. The funds so raised are to be devoted to raising a memorial to the pioneers of this valley. The local Lodge of Druide are going ahead, for on last lodge night nine new members were initiated and several more were proposed. No doubt this lodge will be very strong in membershio very soon, and as it has joined the Grand Lodge of the North Island there is a further incentive for the young men to become members of the brotherhood.
During the past fortnight the weather in this district has been of a very mixed character, sometimes frost, then rain, or wind. On Thursday, sth inst., we had a terrible gale, the wind being something terrible at times, trees being uprooted, etc. Mr W. J. Reilly’s sawmill was knocked about somewhat, the men’s huts unroofed-,, and some overturned. In one place a sheet of galvanised iron was carried nearly half a mile before being deposited.
