THE VOLUNTEERS.

In addition to the R.N.Z.A. (Permanent Force), numbering about sixty, under Alajor Hume, who supplied the

firing party, bearers, and gun detachment, tho military turn-out embraced a very largo number of volunteer® and college and school cadets, all of whom lined the route most efficiently. The cadets were under the command of Colonel Loveday, and the volunteers wore divided into two commands, under Colonel Campbell and Alajor A. de B. Brandon respectively. Alajor Brandon’s command was from Parliament Buildings to Pipitea street; then the cadets under Colonel Loveday formed the central link from Pipitea street to Bowen street; at that point the cadets joined up with Colonel Campbeli’e volunteers. Alajor Brandon had with him in command Captains Hall and Ilarcourt and Sorgcrtfitr-Alajor CbLclough, and the troops that mustered amounted to 507 of all ranks. D Battery numbered (31, tho Engineers 70 Guards 47, Herctaunga Rifles 32, Civil Service 52, College Rifles 31, St. Patrick’s Cadets 70, North Island Constabulary and mounted rifles 10, and over a hundred of other corps. Colonel Loveday was in command of three battalions of cadets, numbering, all told, and of all ranks, Dob. Tho lads assembled punctually, and took up tho positions assigned to them with the alacrity that military discipline and assiduous attention to the instructions of their drill sergeants alone could produce. The threo battalions wore under the command of Alajor Foster, Major Cowles, and Alajor Rurlinson respectively. The Cadet Band, under Air Aloschini, was present to tho number of 35; also the pi pel's of tho Wereroa Band. Tho parade etate oi No. 1 Battalion of Public School Cadets, under Alajor Foster, was as follows: —Mount Cook (Captain Blake) 76, To Aro No. 1 (Captain Darroch) 60, Terraco (Captain Baskiville) 31, Thorndon (Captain Edie) 65. Brooklyn (Captain Look) 34, Alitchelltown (Lieutenant Foster) 30, To Aro No. 2 (Captain Henderson) 55, Karori and Wadestown (Captain, Aionaghan) 57: total. 411. Tho No. 3 Battalion of Public School Cadets, under Alajor G. M. Rurlinson, Captain and Adjutant Betliune, and Alajor Arthur Reid, comprised cadets of Wereroa, Levin, Johiisonvilie, llutt, and Petone corps. A feature was the pipe band of the Wereroa Boys’ Farm, which played “ Lord Lovat’s Lament ” and “ AlcKenzie Lament ” as dirges, and after the funeral enlivened the home-going crowd with “ Highland Laddie ” and such-like compositions. Colonel Campbell’s command mustered aa follows:—Wellington Navals (Lieutenant Menzic6) 90, Petone'Navals (Captain Freeman) 82, Submarine Miners (Lieutenant Toomath) 50, City Rifles (Captain W. G. Duthie) 45, Kelburne Rifles (Captain - Davie) 45, Post and Telegraph Rifles (Captain Morris) 55, Zealandia Rifles (Captain Corrigan) 45, llutt Valley Rifles (Captain Hobbs) 45, Wellington College Cade is (Captain Bees» 160: total, 617.
