LYELL.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The rainfall in the Gorge for the month of September was 4.32 inches. A week of very rough stormy weather was experienced. The beginning of October was also extremely humid, but at time of writing the weather gives promise of improvement, and for the past few days warm sunshine has prevailed. Mining prospects continue dull, and the future of our little town looks anything but bright at present. Work is still being carried on in the Alpine Mine. Gen. erally the reports are poor, but sometimes there is a ray of hope, and men cling to it with a lingering faith; but hope deferred and continuous calls are beginning to make the heart sick. The County elections, which take place on the Bth November, promise to create a little stir. The local candidates are Mr F. Feddersen and Mr C. Mangos. The Lyell School was examined by Chief Inspector Harkness on the 11th inst., and the results are highly satisfactory to. both, pupils and teachers. The pupils intend to give a concert at an early date for the purpose of raising money to purchase prizes. These entertainments were very well supported last year, and it is to ba hoped that the same patronage will ha extended this year. A number of new books have recently been added to the local library, and it is the intention of the Committee to supple* ment these at an early date. The newspapers now include “Wellington Post/* “Lyttelton Times," ‘‘Mines Record/" “Tribune,"* “Prohibitionist/’ “Weldon's Journal," “The New Idea," “Review of Reviews" and “Chambers’s Journal." Mr T. F. Taylor (curate) is at present in Nelson enjeying a well-earned rest from his arduous labours. Mr Taylor intends • to sat for an examination in November, and carries with him the best wishes of his congregation. During his absence services will be conducted by th« Rev. T. York (Reefton) assisted by Mr R. Irwin (lay reader).
