LADY’S LETTER FROM DUNEDIN

On Friday evening Mrs J. M. Ritchie gave a most enjoyable dance- at her residence in Heriot Row. The rooms were all most artistically decorated with spring flowers, daffodils, primroses, and violets. The billiard room and the dining room were thrown into one room and made a superb dancing room, whilst the drawing room was left as a reception room. Amongst the 140 guest® present were the following: Mrs James Mills; Mrs Harris, who wore a lovely gown of pale blue crepe de chine, elaborately trimmed EjH string coloured laoe ; Mrs Benham ; ir Mrs Barclay; Mr and Mrs uLusa; Mr jyirs Finch, the latter wearing pale finished with pearl embroidery; a, Misses Ulrich; Sinclair: Missß*>. rbston, cream taffeta silk, made with cross t.™,- Hrrtiofi - the Misses Webster; Miss Burnes (Christchurch), wore a pretty •white satin and net, finished with tiny roses; Miss Mill; Miss Macaissey; the Misses Williams; Mr and (Mrs Sinclair Thomson; Mr Stocker; Mr and Miss Fisher; -Miss Haggitt; Dr. and Mrs Marshall; Mis® Beatrix Farquhar, a lovely gown of pink tucked silk, trimmed with Paris insertion; Miss DeLautour; Mr and the Misses Sise; Mr Dowmie Stewart; Mr and Miss White; Miss MacKerras; Mr S. Neill; Mr Morris; Miss Maude Reynolds; Miss Angus ; and Mr F. McLean. The St. Matthew’s Guild are holding their annual sale of work this week, but unfortunately they have struck the two wettes-t days we have had this winter, so I am afraid He returns may not be so good as in former vears. On Wednesday evening the Coreen Glee Society rendered a number of glees, under the leadership of Mr F. Oldham, and on Thursday evening there was a short play, and also seme “Pictures from Punch.”

On Thursday evening the St. Clair Amateur Comedy Company gave an entertainment in St. Paul’s schoolroom in aid of the Free Kindergarten Association. Unfortunately, the night was very wet so there was not such a large attendance as there otherwise would have been. The play performed was -Sydney Grundy’s amusing Comedy, ‘ The Late Mr Costello, and every character was exceedingly well sustained. Amongst those taking part were : Mrs Mclviiight, j -Miss Easther v Mr Eiasther, Mr B. Petre, Mr A. Gardner, Miss E. O’Connell, and Mr XL J. Pemberton. Juvenile parties are now over for another term of school, but several more have been given since last I wrote. Mrs Hosking gave a most enjoyable dance for her young people last Thursday, and on Monday evening Mrs Finch gave another juvenile party at her residence in Royal Terrace for a final wind up of the holidays, as the schools all commenced again on Tuesday. Dr and Mrs Batchelor returned to Dunedin by the S.S. Monowai from Melbourne last Wednesday. Dr Biatchelor has been attending the Medical Congress at Adelaide. Mrs Thomas also returned by the Monowai on Wednesday from Melbourne where she has been visiting her relations for the last three months. Miss Alice Shand returned to Wellington last Saturday, after spending her term holidays with her parents in Dunedin. -Miss Marchant returned to Dunedin last Monday, after spending -her term holidays with her parents in Wellington.
