The death is announced by cablegram from London of Mr George Macdonald, poet and novelist. Deceased was born in 1824. He was for some time an Independent minister, but retired. His publications cover a wide range, and date back to 1856. Lieutenant L. W. Braithwaite, R.N., brother of Captain Braithwaite, A.D.C. to his Excellency the Governor, has been appointed first lieutenant to H.M.S. Pyramus, which has been missioned to join the Australian squadron as drill-ship in New Zealand waters.
