RACING IN NEW ZEALAND

RANGITIKEI SPRING MEETING. - MARTON, September 20. The Rangitikei Racing Club’s spring meeting opened in showery weather. Ihe attendance was fair. The heavy state ol the course accounted for a number or withdrawals. The Carterton - trained jolly Trial-, who showed good form at the Grand National meeting, was a good favourite for the Flying, and getting away well was never headed, and won with something in hand. Only ten started for the Maiden out of thirty-one entries. The liawera-owned Compass, Who competed twice unsuccessfully at Marton, was favourite, and won fairly easily from Windy, who ran prominently at Marton. The Hastings-trained Dalny (sister to Orloff) finished fourth. The Hurdles resulted in a good finish between John Peel and Repulse (who was conceding his opponent 2st). The heavy going settled Kiatere, and suited Hutana in the Steeplechase. But for a mishap at the last fence Hikairoa and Playfair would have been placed. Kiatere’s backers were lucky under the circumstances to save their money. Hutana is owned bv Mr C. Hammond (one of the proprietors of the Bulls racecourse). Horse and owner were cheered. McMorran escaped with a shaking. Nonette made his reappearance in the Spring Handicap, looking bright and well. He ran in the rear throughout, and finished last. Lass o’ Gowrie and Seagull shaped better than at Marton. The Hutt - trained Hydrant (recently running in hurdle races) paid a good dividend. Ngatarua had a b&d run through Seagull’s rider not pulling out. Sir Percivale got a good break on m the Rangitoto Hack, and looked all over a winner but the Paliiatua-owned Papatawa sapped up on the inside and effected a surprise.
