DANNEVIRKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The conference held at the South School on Friday night was attended by representatives from the South School 1 , North 'School, Norsewood, Matamau, Woodville, Riritiki, and Whetakura, Mr Collett' being in the chair. The meeting was held for the purpose of selecting a candidate to fill the vacancy in the Hawke’s Bay Education Board caused by the death of Mr S. Johnston. The candidates were: Messrs Burnett (Woodville), Ries and Tausey (Dannevirke), Whittington (Waipawa), and on a vote being taken Mr Burnett was selected. The game between Mrs Gurr and Miss Knight on the golf links on Saturday resulted in a win for the latter. Great interest was taken in the game by the members of the club. The monthly meeting of the Fre Brigade was held on the Ist inst., Captain Drimkwater in the chair. Two new members were proposed. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Gaulton for his donation of 10b 6d in recognition of the services of the brigade at the outbreak of fire on his premises lately. Several settlers are complaining of the sheep being worried lately, Mr Walroad alone having lost 19 lambs. The programmes are issued for the Axemen’s Sports Carnival to be held onthe King’s Birthday. The prize money amounts to <£l2o. Sergt. Drummond, who is touring with the Bisley team, writes that he managed to get well up in the final for the King’s prize. He was 50th out of 2000 odd competitors, and has secured £3O in prize money and the King’s badge, ana the N?R.A. bronze cross in the grand aggregate match, and a silver spoon. He expects to be in Sydney in October, and will take part in the Rifle Meeting ther# in October, and will reach Dannevirke '’early in November.
