FUNERAL OF DEAN HOVELL

NAPIER, September 7.

The funeral of the late Dean Hovell took place this afternoon. The sitting of the Supreme Court was adjourned until 4.30 p.m., and the Chief Justice and officers of the Court attended the funeral. The late Dean having been for • many years chaplain of the Napier Garrison, and later of the East Coast battalion, and also of the Scinde Lodge of Masons, the funeral was both military and Masonic. All the Hawke’s Bay Masonic lodges were represented by members, aud in addition there was a large number of individual members of the fraternity from other parts of New Zealand. Prior to the funeral, a lodge of sorrow was held in the Masonic lodge-room, the ceremonies -in connection therewith being conducted by the superintendent of Hawke’s Bay. The funeral cortege was probably the largest that has been seen in Napier. The sides of the streets en route were lined with people from both town and country, who had attended to pay the last tribute of respect to one who had so endeared himself to all. The services at the graveside were conducted by the Rev C. L. Tuke and the Bishop of Waiapu.
