RACING IN NEW ZEALAND

MARTON CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING. FETLDING. September 6. The Marton Jockey Club’s annual meeting opened in fine weather. There was a record attendance. The sum of ,£5613 was passed through the totalisator, against <£4222 for the cori’esponding day last year. Twenty-two started in the Trial Plate. The Fielding-trained Paper and Jenkins’s mount, Compass, received most support. The Otaki-owned Truce easily settled the opposition. She was bred in New South Wales, and was one of the youngsters disposed of by Mr L. de Pelichet at Palmerston North. Hukaaka and Le Vent were withdrawn from the Trial Hurdles, fourteen going to the post. Tyrone fenced in a slovenly manner, running off entering the straight, also at the hurdle in front of the stand. Half a mile from home the favourite ('3t, Lyra) joined Catepaw, but tired a good deal, and Lady’s Link scored comfortably. Marinella won the Hack .Flying Handicap from end to end. A Wellington-owned pair filled the other places. Coxswain got a good start in the Crofton Handicap, but died away in the straight. The Hastingstrained Assayer was ridden a waiting

race. Sir Percivale, favourite for the Maiden, assumed a good lead from the rise of the barrier. Operetta, stablemate of Assayer, put in a good run from the top of the straight, and beat Sir Percivale, who was under punishment from the distance. After leading for about a mile, Wild Cat dropped out. Baltic won the Hurdles without being extended. The Wanganui-owned Kuroki was favourite for the Tutaenui Welter Handicap, and took charge at the home turn and won comfortably. The Hunt Club Cup was a chapter of accidents. Mr Percy Wotton lost a promising horse when Jackaroo fell at the Hen Coop. The same obstacle accounted for General Babington’s nomination (John Peel). Mr Gaisford made a very clever recovery when Columbine hit the .last fence, and scored a popular win. Hikairoa, who ran third, also hails from Hawke’s Bay. Details:
