GARDENING CALENDAR.

AUGUST.—Perhaps the busiest month of the year, and one on which much of the future season depends. Sow onions for main crop. Early peas, broad beans, radish, spinach, parsley, and short horn carrot, on warm soil for early spring use. Last year's roots of asparagus, sea-kale, and rhubarb may be transplanted. Plant potatoes, cabbage, and cauliflower plants; also, as soon as possible, all fruit tree®. In the greenhouse the most pressing duties of the season will be those of shifting 'to larger pots all plants requiring additional pot room; re-arranging the plants in the greenhouse, slightly shade, and water very lightly. Get hot beds ready for seed raising, etc. Sow choice greenhouse seeds, such as cyclamen, primula, petunias, etc., and most of the hardy and half-hardy annuals may now be sown. Vines may be carefully trained in their proper positions. The temperature of the house may be increased by closing in the vinery early every afternoon. Sow tomatoes, cucumber and melon seed early in the month, in boxes placed in a warm frame or greenhouse, for planting outside in October and November. Pelargoniums and geraniums must nmv be given larger pots. The seed list should be referred to often, especially at this season, as many hints and suggestions may be gleaned from a perusal of the same.
