A Press Association telegram from Christchurch records the death of Mr Charles F. French Pemberton, civil engineer, who arrived in Wellington by the ship Gleaner in 1857. He joined the Government service, and Avas appointed district surveyor for Ashley. He surveyed a number of towns in North Canterbury. Among the passengers who left Wellington by the lonic on Thursday were Messrs A. B. Wiles and D. L. Gibson, two young Queensland sugar-planters. Their reason for leaving that State, emphatically expressed, is the great depression which exists in til© sugar-cane raising industry, consequent upon legislation regarding the employment of black labour in the plantations.
Captain H. Dillner, Avho delivered the collier Dingadee to her neAV owners in Japan, and Mr Turner, the ohief engineer, returned to Wellington on Thursday by the Warrimoo.
