The 600 ft of the western breakwater at Patea has been practically completed. The work was accomplished under the direction of the Patea Harbour Board’s engineer, Mr Leslie Reynolds. Although it was estimated that the original cost would be £15,800, the actual cost so far has left a credit balance of £>1676. The protective works have yet to he done, but it is assumed that the whole work will he effected for £IOOO under the estimated cost. When the loan was raised, through objections of the Crown law officers, the Board found itself over £3OOO short. To make up the deficit £2041 from the revenue has been transferred to the building account, and so far as the loan account is concerned, the wall cost only £12,000. It is now pr&posed by tne Board, under advice from Mr Leslie Reynolds, to extend the wall to 700 ft. The Maoris used to make From the pollen of the raupo gingerbread cakes which were very durable, and could be stored for long periods. The curator of the Colonial Museum has one to-day that was given to him twenty-five years ' ago, and “it is as good now as it was then.”
