Two days prior to the arrival of the mail steamer Sierra at San Francisco on her last voyage, one of the crew was found to be suffering from smallpox. On arrival at Sian Francisco the vessel was quarantined, but the passengers were allowed to land after being vaccinated. The crew w r ere placed in quarantine for fourteen days. This necessitated a new crew being engaged, with the exception of the heads of departments. Mr Sproule, general manager in New Zealand for the Oceanic Steamship Company, returned to Auckland by the Sierra on the 7th inst. Mr Sproule says the Oceanic Company, so far from being content with the present condition of affairs, hopes in the near future to make improvements in the service that will he as great an advance upon the present service as that made on the service of four years ago. The company contemplates building steamers of 8000 tons to run a fortniuhtlv service.
