DANNEVIRKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) . An entertainment in aid of the uniforms of the Rifle Cadets is to be held on the 23rd inst. A capital programme is being arranged, and the tickets are selling w'dl* A presentation on behalf of the subscribing ratepayers, was made by the Mayor to Pastor Ries, during an interval in the Council meeting on the Bth inst. It was a handsome gold watch and chain, as a memento of his two yea.rs’ term of office as Mayor. Pastor Ries feelingly responded, and expressed himself as agreeably surprised. The Poultry Society have decided to hold a two-daysr’ show next year, and the dates are to be fixed for 20th and 21st July. Mr A. S. Mackay, of Te Aroaha, has been visiting Dr Reid Mackay, of Dannevirke. ; On Monday evening the Drill Hall was crowded to witness the West Pictures and Brescians, and the entertainment was much enjoyed by those present. The large audience that attended goes to prove that a good theatre is really needed here.
On the 9th inst. Miss Ethel Smith, eldest daughter of Mr T. W. Smith, of Dannevirke, was married by the Rev. MLr. Fox, of Weber, to Mr Monk, of Waikanae. St. John’s Church was well filled by the friends of the bride, who looked charming in white silk and the usual wreath and veil. She was attended by three bridesmaids, and was given away by her father. Messrs Calder and Drummond intend making extensive additions to their factory, in order bo extend their butter-box industry. The many friends of Mr Hyde, of the local Pose-office, will sympathise with him in the sad death of his young wife, which occurred on the Bth inst., after a brief illness.
