LONDON, August 7. In the Northumberland Tennis Championship, Brookes (Australia) beat Smith (England) in the semi-final by two sets to one, and Dunlop (Australia) beat Brookes in the final by two sets to one. Reporting ' the. third day’s tennis matches for the British lawn tennis championships, the “Westminster Gazette,” in the course of' its remarks, says: —Before this match, A. F. Wilding, of New Zealand, the Cambridge President had come through a terrific game with Clothier, while Lamed, now the last surviving American in the Singles, had narrowly escaped -defeat at the hands e: Wilding’s fellow-colonial, 11. A. Parker. Clothier’s defeat was unexpected, although the strenuous character of Wildinj As attack, and.his wonderfully sustained vigour and pluck were fully" recognised The match went 'first one way and
then the other, and it was only at the very end of The fifth and 'final 'sat that the victory of the Cantab was assured. No fewer than sixty-three games were contested, which is as near .a record for Wimbledon as one could find. Larned .was palpably "slack” against Parker when fie started, and but 'for flashes of his real greatness ai. most essential periods of the male! lie must have been beaten like his colleagues. Parker, on the other hand, played with great dash and consistency, his service always being difficult to negotiate and his curling cross-shots highly effective.
