AUSTRALIA V. MIDDLESEX.

A WIN FOR THE COLONIALS. LONDON, August 10. At Lord’s to-day the Australians began a match against Middlesex. The weather was fine at the opening, and the wicket fast. There was a fairly large attendance of the public. Following are the teams :■ — Australia.—Hill, Darling, Trumper, Armstrong, Laver,Cotter, McLeod, Hopkins, Noble, Duff, and Kelly. Middlesex. McGregor, Bosanquet, Warner, Wills, J. Douglas, Stodgon, E. Beldam, G. Beldam, Hearne, Trott, and Tarrant.

Darling won the toss and elected to bat. The opening was none too reassuring, as Trumper was caught in the slips from the figst ball by Trott, and the same fieldsman disposed of Hopkins off his fourth ball. Hill, after scoring 4, was clean bowled by Beldam, the second and third wicket falling at 8. Noble and Armstrong were then associated, and stemmed the tide. Fifty appeared in forty-five minutes, and the total was taken to 119 before a separation was effected. Armstrong gave a fine display of hard driving, knocking up his score in fifty minutes. His score included six fourers. He gave a chance when he had made 5. Noble and Darling carried the total to 135, when heavy rain set in, and play was abandoned for the day. LONDON, August 12. A fresh wind was blowing when the match Australia v. Middlesex was resumed to-day. The wicket was a drying one. There was a fair attendance of the public. The Australians, whose first innings the previous day was interrupted by rain when they had made 135 runs for the loss of four wickets, continued batting. Noble (56) and Darling (10) added 5 to the previous day’s total, when Darling was dismissed by a catch by Bosanquet. Tarrant then went on to bowl, and Noble was stumped, off his first hall. He compiled his 68 in two hours in faultless style, hitting eleven fourers. Six wickets for 167. McLeod contributed 18, and Laver failed to score, the seventh and eighth wickets going at 197. Duff batted an hour before being stumped. Nine for 215. The last pair—Kelly and Cotter — livened up the game considerably, adding runs in quick time, until Kelly got out leg before to Trott, the innings closing f or 261. Tarrant, after being 30 minutes -at the wickets without scoring, while Warner was putting on runs, warmed up, and put together 20 before being dismissed. Three wickets for 84. With the exception of Warner, none of the others made any stand, and five wickets were down for 90, and seven for 108. Then Warner’s time came., In trying to hit Armstrong he got leg before.
