Subscriptions are being raised in Gisborne (says a Press Association telegram) for Mrs Worthington, the old lady who is said to bo on her way to New Zealand from San Francisco, after travelling for some time between the United States and Canada, and being excluded from both countries owing to the immigration restriction laws. The Taihape “Post” relates how a simple but expensive accident occurred to a bush sawmill last week. The en-gine-driver left his engine just moving quietly in good order, and went to give a hand in the bush. In his absence the governor belt slipped off, and the speed increased until the engine shook itself out of its bed, the pulleys flew off and the shaftings, and there was a general wreck. Four hundred and fourteen Christchurch shopkeepers, of all classes of trade, have, according to a letter received by the New Zealand Shopkeepers’ Association on Friday, signed a, recommendation for the repeal of clause 3 of the Shops and Offices Act. Ninety per cent, of the shopkeepers in that city are stated to be anxious that the clause should be repealed.
