The “ Manawatu Herald ” mentions I that during the last few days large j' g antities of coal have been cast up on j the beach near Foxton. It also notes the discovery of huge numbers of a rare species of cockle, called by the Maoris “ kaikaikaroro.” Entries closed on Friday for the Palmerston winter show, commencing on the 20th inst. Theie is a substantial increase on last year’s figures. One hundred and forty-one exhibits in dairy produce were entered, and 4&9 entries in roots, vegetables, and fruits, making a total of 570, against 461 last year, "(n fho poultry section 1150 entries were recorded, as against 921 last year. All the space available for machinery is taken up. The Governor has consented to open the exhibition. |
