THE EASTER MANOEUVRES AT NELSON.
The Easter manoeuvres at Nelson this year were carried out at the railway terminus, between Motupiko and JHamaroa. Besides the local volunteers, a number of corps from Picton, Blenheim, Westport, Greymouth, Millerton, Denniston, Takaka and Motueka also took part. The total number of men attending the camps was 650, comprising
ten companies of infantry, four companies of mounted rifles, two batteries of artillery, two bands, and a bearer and cycle corps. The Marlborough and West Coast men arrived by steamer on Good Friday morning, the Takaka, Motueka and Marlborough Mounted Rifles marching overland from their respective headquarters. Owing to showers very little was done on Good Friday, but on Saturday a sham fight took place on the hills near Maniaroa. On Sunday shell practice was carried out by the H (Nelson) and I (Westport) Batteries, and at night a night attack took place. The manoeuvres concluded with a review on the Motupiko racecourse on Easter Monday. The weather on the whole was fine, but cold.
