OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Some of the local tradesmen do not show much originality in the art of advertis.ng. Here is a. satupls oi tvvernftietlicentury in advertising, as it is served to the public in this part of Taranaki. “Mr Blank has much pleasure in notifying the public of Opunalce and the surrounding districts that he has taken over the business recently carried am by Mr Brown, and hopes, by strict attention to business, to merit a fair share of the Sublic’s support.” The same notice by re same advertiser Avill appear for years.
Your correspondent had occasion to use an inquiry form for a registered letter, and to his surprise found that the document was in. French, with an Etaglish translation in very small print beneath it. Since then he has been trying to ascertain what is Avrong with the English and why it is not good enough for our postal documents. Why msult a language, which, besides being our own, will one day be the universal language. The football season here opens on Satnrday next in real earnest. Ths seniors meet Hawera on the local ground, while the iunions have to journey to
Hawera. There is at least one man in the Opunake juniors who should this season be tried in the seniors, but his particular place seems to be usurped by a man who has certainly seen his best days. A new floor is to be put down in the Town Hall shortly, and the Town Board is arranging a grand ball to take place on the completion of the work.
